days 10 through 19 {wardrobe remix}

Wow… 9 days at once, this is going to be a long post.

Day 10 – Ben was off at school all during the daylight hours so I decided to take a self timer portrait indoors and Amelia decided she wanted to be in it as well. It was definitely a comfy/cozy day – just my regular jeans, a tank top and cardigan with my super cozy toms.

Day 11 – This is me. Wearing jeggings. Yes. I said it (or rather typed it). I own jeggings. I laughed at them at first but they are SO comfy and they fit well under boots. I goofed a little picking items for the 30 day challenge and didn’t really pick anything other than this dress that was long enough to cover my rear end (I will wear jeggings but not with an uncovered rear – I’m not quite there yet) so I am not sure if I’ll be able to wear them again until the challenge is over.

Day 12 – Thanksgiving day! We spent the weekend with family in a fabulous rental house on the coast where it was actually a bit colder than it had been in our neighborhood. I was pretty cold taking this picture and I’m hoping that’s why I have the weird look on my face. In any case, this is one of my absolute favorite dresses. Another item with not so many different ways to wear it but I just loved it too much not to include it.

Day 13 – Another favorite, go-to, cozy outfit (seems like I have a lot of those, huh?) Once again, comfy jeans, a cozy sweater and shoes. All set for a post-Thanksgiving lounge (and more overeating)

Day 14 – Note to self – Slouching is not cute, and neither are fake smiles. Yikes. Not my finest photograph. I do think this outfit was fine, maybe not my favorite but still ok. I don’t know if I like the light colored skirt with a dark sweater and having the sweater buttoned also looks weird, but I never would have known if I hadn’t photographed it so I guess I learned my lesson.

Day 15 – This was a surprisingly successful outfit (at least I thought it was). I wasn’t sure about tucking in a shirt with a defined waist but I did it anyway (look at me breaking my own rules!) and I think it turned out fine. I do really like this skirt with a belt which is something I’d never tried and I also think I should own more blouses for tucking. I never used to be a tucker-inner but I think I’m starting to like it.

Day 16 – Ben was off at school again so Allison took this shot. She said I was doing the same pose I do in all the pictures (well, yeah, I don’t know how to do anything else) so she suggested jumping. Here is my “I look CRAZY” jumping face 🙂

Day 17 – Another day of no Ben in the daytime (are you sensing a trend? He’s working on final projects. Plus it gets dark before 5 here, madness I tell you) so we took one indoors at night. Lovely blank wall, right? Every time I see someone on a blog with a belt over a shirt or sweater I think it looks cute, and yet every time I try it myself I feel silly. I always imagine people walking by and thinking “that silly girl, doesn’t she know that belt isn’t holding anything up?” But I am going to keep doing it in the hopes that I will eventually get used to it. I used to feel awkward in skinny jeans and now I love them to bits.

Day 18 – I included the green top I wore yesterday in my 30 picks just so I could wear it with my black shirt. It’s become a favorite. Two shirts is warmer than one and I am a fan of being warm, plus for some reason I always just feel good when I wear them together. With my skinny jeans and toms of course. Shocked? I know, I’m so unpredictable.

Day 19 – Which brings us to today! Whew! All caught up. Today’s outfit is a shameless rip-off of this outfit on Kendi Everyday. Right down to the mustard yellow scarflet. I think I actually gasped out loud when I saw hers “ooh my I MUST own that scarf!” I love everything mustard yellow and being cold here I clearly need as many scarves as possible. One of the rules of the 30 for 30 is that you’re not supposed to shop for any new clothing during that whole month… so I made the scarf instead. Are there any rules about that? Someone actually left a comment on Kendi’s blog about finding a similar pattern on ravelry (which I happen to LOVE) so I scooted right on over and set to work making my own. I do think my outfit is a little less pulled together than hers. I really wish I’d had a brown or other neutral top (other than my yellow, which would have looked weird) to wear as a top layer – but I didn’t. So black it was. I also wish I had had that little bit of blouse sleeve poking out but my blouse was short sleeved. Next time it will be better. Oh yes, this outfit will have a next time!

technical difficulties

Sorry – I know it looks like I’ve given up on my 30 for 30 (and posting in general) but I haven’t.  My computer decided to break and my flash memory card reader to transfer images from my camera to my computer is no longer working at all.  I am hoping to get it fixed this afternoon and to post a whole chunk of days (I don’t even know which one I’m up to by now, but I’m still wearing my 30 items and photographing them!).  New post soon!

technical difficulties

days 8 & 9 {wardrobe remix}

Yesterday was freezing cold again.  I have been running outside without my jacket to take the pictures but realistically I look exactly the same every day when I go outside – a big ball of puffy wool coat with maybe a scarf peeking out and a pair of gloves.  The only time my actual clothes are showing is when I’m inside, which since I have toddlers and don’t go to work, means that pretty much the only people to ever see my “outfits” are my two year olds and Ben.  Oh well.  Some days I go to the grocery store or Target.  Woohoo.  I’m sure the shoppers there really appreciate my efforts 🙂

In any case here was yesterday’s photo

and here is today’s

I’m very proud of myself for not wearing my boots today. I think instead of “30 for 30” my challenge should have been called “try not to wear your boots everyday”. The cold weather makes me want to stay as warm as possible and really there isn’t anything more comfortable than my boots. I am addicted. So I’m patting myself on the back for wearing flats today. Even if it does mean that my legs are kind of cold.

days 8 & 9 {wardrobe remix}

day 7 {wardrobe remix}

This photo should come with a disclaimer – no, I’m not missing the top of my head. My hat is white and so is the sky. Sorry. My mistake. I think I need a bright and colorful hat and I have every intention of making one, I just need to learn to crochet first because I have yet to make a knit one that I like.

I couldn’t believe how cold it was today, especially compared to yesterday. Every day this week it’s just seemed more and more like winter, which (I can’t believe) doesn’t start until the END OF DECEMBER! Did you know that? Maybe it’s common knowledge but it’s not something that I ever realized. As far as I was concerned from what I knew from watching TV and the one other year I lived here… snow starts in the end of November/early December and from that point on it’s winter. Right? Snow = winter? Ben thinks it is funny that I don’t actually know when the seasons are but come on, I’m from California. Winter to us is really just a slightly cooler version of the entire rest of the year. How was I to know it started so late? So anyway, I just wanted to say that I looked it up yesterday so I would know for sure… and yes… winter starts on December 21st. Which seems entirely too late. And if it’s not even winter yet then my goodness, it’s going to be a LONG time before the spring starts and the warm sun comes back. Can I move back to California yet?

some things I’ve made lately {baking}

With all this posting about my wardrobe (probably excessive amounts of posting, but that’s what a one a day challenge is for, right?) you’d think I haven’t been up to much of anything else. Actually the opposite is true. I’ve been up to lots of something elses. I am almost done knitting Amelia a new fall jumper dress. I’m also painfully close to finishing Paul’s quilt (although it’s taken way, way too long) and I also made the kids Halloween costumes. Plus I’ve been baking. A LOT. We’ve had at least one kind of muffin and one kind of cookie or treat every week for the past three weeks. Some weeks we’ve had two kinds of muffins. Crazy, I know. These are some of the latest (and tastiest) things I’ve cooked up.

Fall muffins. Based on this post at joy the baker. I made a few small changes. First, I made muffins (obviously) because we didn’t have a loaf pan and the kids love muffins anyways. That meant I needed to bake them for less time. I didn’t add the nuts because I still worry about the kids choking on nuts. I didn’t have any maple syrup so I used honey, and since honey is thicker than syrup I added a smidge more water. I also threw in an egg just for kicks, because, you know, I’d changed so much already I thought “why not?” They turned out DELICIOUS… some of my favorite of all time. I am glad that there are so many (the recipe made 2 dozen) because now I can eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And snacks. Mmmmm, muffin snacks.

The second thing I made is a batch of carrot cookies. I know that carrots and cookies might not *seem* like a natural combination but they actually go quite well together. Especially with a delicious citrus glaze. Just to make things complicated for you if you’re trying to make the same thing at home (it seems I can’t leave a poor recipe alone) I used less oil and more carrot (I used 5 whole carrots as someone in the reviews suggested) and I also made a lemon glaze instead of an orange glaze since we didn’t have any orange juice. They turned out delicious and fluffy and irresistible. I have been eating at least 2 a day since I baked them. They also make a delightful breakfast 🙂

Aaaand… mini pie. These might be my favorite and also might make an appearance at Thanksgiving (I’m dreaming of a whole spread of different flavors of mini fruit pies) I can’t say enough good things about these. You should just go make them. You won’t regret it. Mine might not be as photogenic as the one in the tutorial but I promise you it’s as tasty.

day 5 {wardrobe remix}

I put this yellow shirt in the mix because I thought I needed more color.  It’s just too bad that whenever I wear it with a sweater or jacket you can hardly see the yellow and pretty much every day from here on out is going to require a sweater or jacket.  Oh well, that’s what red scarves are for, right?  I also feel like I might be wearing one too many shades of neutral but it’s too late to change it now.  I’ve already been photographed and it’s on the internet.  Plus who says you can’t wear navy, grey, denim AND brown all together?  I am clearly making my own rules today.  I also would like to add that sweater tights are my new favorite article of clothing.  Just like a pair of tights for days you want to wear a skirt and it’s cold out… only infinitely warmer.  I had no idea they even existed until we moved here.  I guess you learn something new every day.

day 5 {wardrobe remix}

day 4 {wardrobe remix}

It’s raining today so of course I had to wear rainboots (and why not yellow when the sky is grey and bleak?). I had all of 5 minutes to get dressed this morning because Ben let me sleep in and only woke me when it was time for him to leave for school… except that he wasn’t going to be home until after it got dark and I wasn’t about to miss out on my picture on the 4th day. I do tend to slip eventually on daily projects (ahem… photo-rific) but I have never missed a day *this* early and I wasn’t about to start now.

I really, really don’t know what to do with myself in pictures. You’d think that after years of photographing other people and helping them pose and feel natural in front of the camera I’d have a better idea. But I don’t. I always end up feeling silly standing in “poses” because clearly I’m not a model and don’t resemble one at all. This is my attempt today at avoiding the awkward pigeon toe stance. If my feet are together but my knee still turned in does that count?

day 4 {wardrobe remix}

30 for 30 pieces {wardrobe remix}

Sorry for the wonky colors in these pictures.  I waited too long and took them when there wasn’t enough light (again).  I really should know better.  I kind of had to laugh at myself a little while labeling the clothing (wow, I shop at Old Navy a LOT apparently) since I have almost exclusively stuff from big box stores (hello Target and Payless shoes).  But oh well, it seems to be what everyone is doing so I went along and tagged mine as well.  So without further ado,

the skirts

the pants

the t-shirts

the tops

the dresses

the jackets (as far as I read the rules my “real” winter jackets don’t count towards the 30 items. that’s how I’m playing in any case)

the sweaters

and finally… my favorite part… shoes

All of my accessories and such (jewelry, scarves, tights, socks, etc) aren’t counted in the 30 items and it’s lucky for me because looking through my closet I am apparently getting most of my color from shoes and accessories (who knew?) and I need a lot of it when the sky is grey. I also have to say (in the spirit of full disclosure) that while there is only one white camisole pictured in this set of 30 items I have a veritable ARMY of white camisoles in my dresser. They seem to be something of a wardrobe staple for me, a security blanket if you will. I am almost always wearing one under pretty much anything else I might happen to be wearing that day. So instead of filling my 30 items with 7 different versions of the same white camisole I’m going to just count them all as one item. Call me a cheater if you will but I just don’t feel right going out of the house without a shirt on (under my shirt that is) and I think Ben will thank me for wearing more than one so that I have a chance to, you know, wash it… and not stink… and all that good stuff.

So there you have it. These are the only 30 articles of clothing you will see me in for the next 30 days. Hopefully I still love them all at the end of this little experiment. We shall see
