2014 Skies – an instagram project 365

2015 is here (ps, how is it already almost February?!) which means that I have officially finished my second year of #365daysofsky over on instagram. Behold! The entire year 2014….

During the first year of my 365 days of sky project, remembering to take a photo each day was something that took practice and concentration. This year it felt like second nature, like something that I have always done. I am excited to keep the project going and to see what years and even decades of sky look like all together. If you want to follow along as I post you can find me over on instagram – @katyregnier and you can see all of my sky posts under the tag #krdailysky

April and May skies – an instagram project 365

Well, it’s officially summer. I think it’s safe to say that the end of my kids’ school year officially knocked me on my butt. How is it possible that in kindergarten there are already enough events, special activities and projects to keep me running in circles 24/7? In any case, vacation is here and I am SO EXCITED to have some time to catch up and do nothing with the kids. Lazy days and dinners outside, lots and lots of swimming and popsicles. We are gonna have fun, and I am even going to try to make some time to blog (gasp!) I’m starting off the summer of blogging with the recaps of my April and May sky series. I can’t believe we are just a few days away from July!

February and March skies – an instagram project 365

I have always loved winter sunsets on the beach – they seem to have a little bit (or a lot) of magic in them. The cooler air and the wide, empty stretches of wet sand reflecting the vibrant pinks and blues. We spent almost every day at the beach at sunset for two straight weeks from the end of February to early March. It was amazing. And then, just like that, the time changed rolled around. I love sunshine and I love having longer days, but I’d somehow forgotten since last spring that the time change means no more weekday beach sunsets. It’s hard enough to wake our kids up for school when they have had a full night of sleep, but stay up an extra hour to see the sunset before dinner and you’re guaranteed to ruin the next morning. When I start to get down about the fact that I’m now missing out on all sorts of pinky-orange goodness I just have to remind myself that issues like feeling trapped inside at 7pm on weeknights (just exactly when the sunset is most magical) are extremely short-lived. I’m sure that in a few short years we won’t even remember that our kids used to have a strict “bedtime”. And of course we’re using the weekends and spring break as a good excuse to bend the rules so we can soak in as many sunsets as possible.

I am in total denial about it being the middle of February. How can it be February when this year just started? And for that matter, how can it be 2014 when I swear that the clock just struck midnight in the year 2000. What? Is it just me that thinks that time is going much too terribly fast lately? Maybe it’s the fact that my kids are celebrating their 100th day of kindergarten today and instead of looking like the teeny tiny and timid preschoolers that I dropped off on the first day, they now look like they fit right in amongst the other elementary school kids. I just can’t believe how much can change so quickly. In any case, it’s almost a new month again so it’s about time I posted my January skies. I think that January sunsets on the beach might just be my favorite sunsets of all time. The colors are out of this world and there is almost never a crowd. Oh sky, you are just so pretty.

Happy New Year! We made it to 2014, can you believe it?! And here to prove it is an ENTIRE YEAR’S worth of instagram sky photos!

#365daysofsky by @katyregnier - an instagram project 365 by Katy Regnier photography on Permanent Riot

I don’t think I quite knew what I was getting myself into when I started this project, I was hoping to take one picture of the sky every day for a year, but instead I’ve gotten totally and completely hooked on sky-watching! If only you could see my phone’s camera roll – chock full to the brim (seriously, I keep getting that “your device storage is full” warming but can’t stand the thought of deleting them) with pictures of the sky, I typically take between 5-10 a day, depending on how interesting the clouds are… some days I’ve been known to take 20 or more.

I’ve also decided not to end my project with the new year, but to keep going indefinitely. I am way too addicted to quit now! One minor change I’m making to my project this year is to add a new hashtag, #krdailysky to each of my posts on instagram. This year a few people joined in throughout the year and while my #365daysofsky hashtag was unused when I started, it’s getting kind of hard to pick out my own skies from the handful of regular posters these days. I’m so excited that the daily sky has caught on, but I want to make sure my own are still searchable. I actually have a few more ideas floating around that I’m starting to work on, so keep an eye out for those, but in the meantime let’s celebrate the beauty that is an entire year of sky … wishing you a very happy new year as well!

Summer skies – an instagram project 365

Here it is, nearing the end of October – and my 365 days of sky project is still chugging along full steam ahead on instagram. I am so excited to have kept up with it every day, even if the recaps haven’t been posted as often as I’d planned. I can’t believe it’s already nearing the end of the year – out of the beautiful “stays light forever” summer days and into the “dark before you even have dinner” chilly days of fall. So long, summer skies. You were glorious. I can’t wait to see you again next year.

If you have been checking in on the blog you might have noticed it collecting cobwebs. I’m still here, alive and (mostly) well – my broken nose seems to be healing and hopefully I’ll get the all-clear that I don’t need any further interventions in the future when I visit my doctor again on Monday. I know that it’s already mid-June and I am a bit behind on the project 365 weekly posts AND this sky series, but don’t worry… I haven’t been slacking on taking the pictures, just caught up in the hubub of the end of the school year (how can the end of the preschool school year be so hectic? but it is!) and distracted from blogging.

Summer is starting and the June gloom (aka marine layer aka nonstop fog) is rolling into southern California, but it’s nice to look back on how many beautiful sunny days we had in May. Here’s hoping that there are many more to come in the next few weeks!

I think that this is going to go down in history as the fastest year ever. Or maybe it just seems like that to me because I have so many things going on? In any case the end of the month sneaks up on me every single month and I can’t believe that I’m more than a third of the way through my daily sky project. I know I still have 8 more months to go but I honestly can’t see myself ever going back to life without these daily pauses to glance upward. They do a surprisingly good job of bringing me peace and increasing my zen quotient. If you haven’t been following along, you can find all of the daily sky goodness in real time over on instagram – @katyregnier and the sky posts are tagged #365daysofsky.

Have you been following along with my #365daysofsky project on instagram? Another month has gone by and it’s time for the recap collage. I am completely hopelessly impatient with a lot of things in my life – and as of right now the thing I’m most looking forward to seeing is this entire year in one giant grid. The big nerd in me just can’t wait! For now here’s just a snippet – one from each day in March.

March already! I can’t believe how fast this year is already flying by. Maybe it’s the fact that it was in the 80s today or maybe it’s all of the blossoms on our fruit trees in the backyard, but I feel like we have fast-forwarded squarely into the middle of spring (maybe even summer?)

I was a little bit worried when I started my #365daysofsky project on instagram that I’d have trouble taking a photo every single day without repeating myself, but it seems as thought I needn’t have worried. Even on bright blue days there’s always a sunset, and it’s fun to find new ways to frame the sky. It’s such an amazing thing, isn’t it? It’s always in motion and the clouds on one day are never the same as the next. I’ve found that with the exception of extremely rainy days (where it’s hard to get outside without getting my iphone all wet) there really hasn’t been a single day that I wasn’t excited to go out and see what the sky had in store for me.

So without further ado, here is the collection of all of my February sky shots – I don’t put them together until the very end of the month so seeing them all in one spot is a fun surprise. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of our beautiful California skies.
